About Willem van Kemenade: China Analyst
My educational and professional background
I have advanced degrees (drs.) in History and Chinese from the Universities of Amsterdam and Leiden. From 1977 through 1997 I worked as a correspondent for NRC Handelsblad, leading Dutch political and business daily, based alternately in Hong Kong, Taipei and Beijing. I have travelled extensively in most parts of the Asia-Pacific region. During the last nine years I have worked as a consultant on China and (South-) East Asia with special focus on China’s integration in the global economy and security-structures.
Teaching
I have been teaching executive programme courses at the China-Europe International Business School in Shanghai, the EU-China Managers Training Programme in Beijing, the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands and the Vlerick Leuven-Gent School of Management in Belgium. I lecture on China’s diplomacy and global grand strategy at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations in The Hague.
Writing
After writing some 1.200 articles for Dutch and occasionally international newspapers, I continue to write policy papers/articles on a broad variety of topics for The Washington Quarterly, Royal Dutch Shell, the International Crisis Group (Brussels), Amnesty International, the European Institute for Asian Studies (Brussels) and the XRG Exceptional Resources Group in Hong Kong. Also, I have spoken at a series of (international) conferences on these topics.
Books
My book ‘’China, Hong Kong, Taiwan Inc., The Dynamics of a New Empire" was published in New York in 1997/1998 by Alfred Knopf and Vintage Books.The book was also published in multiple German, Dutch, Chinese and Turkish editions.
